This is my final 4 images I decided to leave the white background because I think enhances the black foam board and any colour I chose just made it look messy cause there's such chaos in the loop |

Final 4
This is what I wanted my images to look like
I really wanted this to be my 4 images as I think the fourth one represents my ideas more than the one I had to go with
I had a mishap with the R-drive and couldn't put this one onto it so I had to go with a different one. I think this one shows the structure turning into nouse more because the last one is looped 200 times where as the one I went with is only looped 65 times
Also you can see the yellowy roofed house more in 4th of this one which I think differentiates it from the others
Also the gaps in the second and third images break up the noise and add an element of structure into it, which I like
I'm still proud of the one I chose but I'm quite disappointing that this didn't get to be my final but just know that this is what I had :)

First batch of houses
This is the layout of my houses in their first positionI think it shows structure as they're placed in three rows but slightly scattered
I think the structure of my piece is predominantly within the forms of the houses and the noise is based on how the houses are looped and when overlapped they grow and rise.
I think it looks quite aesthetically pleasing and interesting and I really am pleased I decided to make them 3D over 2D cause it makes it look more chaotic and noisy in the third and fourth images

House development

| With this one i've just elongated the width of my basic house and added another roof. I've kept the door a simple colour to make it look slightly realistic and blend in |

| I'm adding garages to some of my houses for variation Also colour changes are important to show that my forms are repeating and doubling up through the latter images |
Trying to build my houses and figure out how to loop
My idea is to have a lot of cute little colourful houses like the ones in my precedent image but have them on a loop so it gets chaotic and looks like it's a shack community. I'd have more colours than pink and yellow as these are just my practice houses. I like the shack idea because they're easy to make and still look like houses, and also it's actually what the houses of where I'm replicating are. It might be risky to do this idea but I really think it's different and original so I'll see

Wellington vs Italy
I think wellington houses show a story of colonisation a bit more than the shacks of Italy and cool potentially look really cool if I can code them well enough. Both of the layouts of the city have the same gradient in house distribution so they could both look good as a final image
I think the main difference is the colours. Wellington colours are a lot more dull where as the italy colours are super expressive and vibrant . There are aspects of colour in wellington which could work better because it's less in your face and more clean and simple - which I like a lot when designing stuff.
If I were to do the wellington houses I could have a few pastel houses and coloured roofs so it's exciting but not too much

Are you hearing right? Or left?
|
||
With my interactive object I am testing whether
or not we are capable of dissociating our ears from each other by forcing the
participant to separate their hearing so that they focus on and repeat what
they hear in one ear even though they will be listening to a similar sound in
the other ear. My basis stems from my realization that with our touching
sense we favour either our left or right limbs so I wanted to explore whether
or not our hearing sense reacts in the same way. My concept is one which we
don’t normally take notice of in our day to day life so with this experiment
I hope to challenge my participants with an experience that they didn’t
previously think about, test whether or not there are left and right
dominancy levels with their hearing and explore whether the common human
being is able to separate their ears from each other.
Instructions
You will
hear a collection of rhythmic beats consisting of only two types of drum
beats. The white pad represent the higher clap sounding beat and should be
played with your left hand and the black pad represents the lower base
sounding beat and should be played with your right hand.
When repeating the beats use both your hands the play out the tune -Place the head phones in your ears making sure that they are in their designated ears -Turn on the iPod and press play on level 1 of the 8 levels -On the black and white pads repeat only the beat you hear in your left ear -Now repeat only the beat playing in your right ear -Listen to each ear separately to see if you have repeated the beat correctly -When you think you have each beat move onto the next level and repeat the process (School of design website won't let me upload the instructions) |
Materials
I've decided to make my base project out of wood
I think wood looks cleaner and presentable when sanded down and or painted so that's what I'm doing
Spent the weekend drilling out a hole for my iPod in the wood and elevating the back of it so that it slants towards the participant and is easier to use. Also I figured if I hide the iPod and just show the screen then the project is more my own and less about the iPod and apple.
I'm currently in a last dash attempt to make instructional and answer booklets so that when the person uses it they can see what levels they actually got right and hopefully it will enhance their experience since creating a original and exciting experience is a big part of the project.
This is my base so far. I'm going to white wash the top layer because it's not that nice wood and the other stuff is a nice colour that would contrast with the white.

Original concepts & house designs
I'd quite like my houses to start minimal and then progressively slope up the hill to show it's a community. I'd like the first houses to be larger then the next ones to show it's on an angle and it moving further away from the view point.
These are just rough sketches on what i'd like the overall images to look like
I want a variety of houses and maybe even a church just to make it look like a town
I want it all to look cartoony but now I'm not sure about the pastel colour's I had before as I think they might be too much. I'd possibly like to have off whites and cremes to make it relate to wellington houses as they also slope up hill aswell.

Colourful houses
This image attracts me becasue of the gradient of the houses and the pastely colours used. If I were to do this I'd copy both the gradient and the colour but have the houses cartoony and in empty space.
I'd like to have a pale blue background aswell.
Precedent images
I'm really attracted to using the human form as my object so I've been
looking for examples on how the form could be repeated to form a pattern
I'd like to do something like this;
Or have a bunch of figured walking in different directions to create chaos and a relationship between structure and noise

Ideas
I'd like to do something that's not completely abstract like create a picture or a form with the lines and loop it so it repeats itself over and over again in different colours and sizes but I know that would be really hard
I really like the triangled form that is on our project outline sheet. I think the lay out and how it's simple but effective is really cool and applealing.

Feed back
Toady I got three people to test 4 levels of my my game out and I got a mixed bag of feedback. The first guy got them all but took a little while. He found that when the sounds intertwined and a beat played in both ear at the same time threw him off.
The second person found it really difficult. She didn't understand what to repeat so I need to explain the rules a lot better. Her reaction was to get angry and confused so possibly I could test also how it makes people feel and record their reactions
The third person was also confused but I played each sound on a loop over and over so she got it in the end. If it's in the Atrium I'd play each level on repeat then people could decide when they've figured it out and change it rather than me making a set allowed time for them to listen and figure it out.
I also noticed people cupped their ears to block out the outside sounds so I should use some kind of earphone earmuff combination to enhance the sound and make it easier to listen to
I also realised that I need to have a solid object rather than just a iPod and making them clap.
I'm not sure if I can afford two drums but it would be awesome if I set it out with a low box with two drums on each side with an iPod in the middle as I really need to focus a lot on the aesthetic side to it aswell.
Also if I'm not there I'd need to have a small booklet containing the rules and answers to the levels so that the experiment is able to stand alone without me.

Interim feedback
It took a lot of explaining for everyone to grasp my concept so I'm wondering if I should change it slightly. We were talking about those driving ad's that test whether or not you can focus on two things at once so I wonder if I should change mine to a similar thing
One Idea I got from the feedback was having my participant listen to two stories in each ear at the same time and get them to repeat aloud one of them afterwards. I'm not sure if it's still testing whether not you have a stronger ear or just testing concentration but I think it could work solidly and might be easier to follow than using a drum and beats.

Project Concept
In this project we were asked to
explore our own and other peoples sense perception in order to design an
interactive project that provides a unique and innovative experience. The sense
I chose to focus my project on is hearing. Whilst brainstorming for this project
I realized that with our touching senses we tend to favour both our left or
right-sided hands and feet so I wanted to explore whether or not our other
senses react in the same way. I plan to
have an interactive object that forces the participant to focus on what they
hear in one ear even though they will be listening to a similar sound in the
other ear. The participant will be listening to different looping drum rhythms
in each ear and will be told which ear to focus on. They will have to repeat the
sound onto a drum to test whether or not they are able to solely copy the one
ear and not get the two sounds confused. My concept is one which we don’t
normally take notice of in our day to day life so with this experiment I hope
to challenge my participants with an experience that they didn’t previously
think about and test whether or not there are left and right dominancy levels with
our hearing

New 25
All except for the top row (which I don't know what to replace with yet) have been remade/re-coded and enhanced
Description of my project
In this project we were expected to explore the nature and extent of form by creating an adaptable system that enables fast and extensive experimentation. In my adaption of the project I manipulated a set of lines, which formed triangles, to form both abstract and contained shapes. I stuck with a Triangle theme in my project as I find the shapes three sides make it easily and cleanly adaptable.
